 VOLUNTEERS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED.CIDS NEW HOPE PREP-SCHOOL WELLINGTON, FREETOWN SIERRA LEONE. Depending on your confidence and skillset, you can either assist teachers or take your own lessons. Either way, you will be making a real difference. We work with vulnerable children in schools which are in desperate need of support. We established schools in two different poor communities. You will have the opportunity to either assist teachers in taking lessons or deliver your own lessons for the children. The children are very eager to learn and delight the opportunity to experience different teaching methods and varying lessons. The communities in the east part of Freetown where one of our project schools is located is on a hill overlooking Wellington community. The people in these communities are very highly religious tolerant. Muslim women marrying to Christian men and Christian women marrying to Muslim men. This tolerant go across the whole of Sierra Leone though the country is predominately Muslim. Muslim children goes to Christian schools and Christian children also attending Muslim schools. ABOUT THE PROGRAM Children’s WelfareFund Network (CWEFUN) A small volunteer based charity organization helping abandoned, orphaned and needy vulnerable children in Sierra Leone, regardless of tribe or religion. We works with needy children in Schools and street children and this brought about the establishment of two primary schools to help educate needy children for free at primary level. One of the schools is located in Freetown and the other is located in a remote village about 80 miles away from the capital city. One of these educational services is currently providing cheaper private school education for children from average earning families and free education to orphans and underprivileged children in Freetown total to 110. And a total of 120 orphans and underprivileged children at the school in the remote village of Kambia Makama village in the Makama Chiefdom Port Loko District. Who can volunteer All high school graduates, teachers and retired teachers. Any healthy male or female with a loving heart to help needy children. Teaching Styles: Students learn by rote (rote learning is a memorization technique based on repetition) and therefore, do not always have underpinning knowledge. This means that lesson delivery is often less interactive than in the West. Teachers will be either fully or partly qualified. A syllabus is followed using a text book and lessons are delivered accordingly. It is not uncommon for teachers to answer their phone during lessons, or leave their class unattended to focus on something else that requires their attention. English is the official language. Lessons will be taught in English and most of the teachers will speak krio and English, so there is not a huge language barrier. Krio is Sierra Leone pigeon English as it sounds like English. Volunteers are encouraged to learn Krio during their stay. The students will want to practice their English speaking with you. Please do not underestimate the impact this can have on a young person trying to learn a new language, as it can be more valuable than you think. The students will enjoy trying to teach you some Krio too! For many pupils at the schools, you being there will be their first interaction with people from the West, meaning some may feel nervous around you. Give it time, keep smiling and, gradually, we are confident you will build up a brilliant rapport. Volunteer job As a teaching assistant volunteer, you will work alongside teachers and other volunteers to help manage the demands of educating classes of mixed pupils. There are typically nursery children (ages 3-6), primary 1 and 2 children (ages 6- 8), primary 3 and 4 (ages 8 – 10), primary 5 and 6 (ages 10- 12) and only one teacher in each class, which can be extremely challenging because of the difference in academic ability across the student body. High-achieving students can be held back and struggling students can often get left behind. Teaching assistants can help bridge that gap because the class can be divided into smaller groups to work on more relevant topics. Once you feel comfortable with your allocated class, it may be that you start helping with lesson delivery and then progress to delivering lessons yourself. What to expect  To help in fund raising for our going projects during your volunteering period with us by using the internet. To visit our other projects outside Freetown. To learn new languages and culture during your stay. To teach children who knows little or nothing about your culture. To teach little children from different communities and homes background. Expect to meet children in from very poor homes and community. To help develop mini projects within the project. To pay a transportation cost pick-up fees of $ 50 USD from the Lungi international airport. This will cover taxi fare from one point to another and it also covers ferry cost. Management Mr. Collins Forest Rich is the project manager of "CWEFUN" projects and he is the one responsible for all communication with all potential donors and volunteers. He is a married man with children and he is very receptive and committed. Come and volunteer with us in Sierra Leone. Mr. Collins has a wealth of experience in working and living with volunteers from all over the world. He manages different projects. Has a team of workers and local volunteers who are always ready to work. Admin officer, teachers and social workers all working in the interest of the project(s) Accommodation Accommodation: (HOME STAY) Accommodation is simple but spacious. There are mosquito nets over the beds and one volunteer to a room. There are 9 people living in our apartment. The house is located within walking distance from the school. We shall make sure that you drink purified pure water throughout your stay. The national electricity power supply is not constant and there is community water taps and wells, where clean water is usually fetched for washing of clothes and bathing. There is also a small petrol generator which may be used to generate electricity in the absence of power. There is a comfortable bedroom. There are three flush toilets for the home. During the rainy seasons water for washing is collected from the house roof. The accommodation is located near a small community field where children and youth comes to play every evening and sometimes in the morning. Volunteers could run around the field in the morning as health exercise. Accommodation is free. Accommodation & Food cost Volunteers stay at the host home in Freetown. Facilities are basic but the room(s) are comfortable Bedroom (singe) Food & Beverages Volunteers are provided with three meals per day and will get to sample the local cuisine. Your meals with consist of a staple such as beans stew, groundnut stew, pasta or potato leafs stew along with vegetables and fresh fish or meat. Volunteers are responsible for their living expenses.  Environment The people in these communities and its surroundings are very peaceful, receptive and nice to strangers, especially to those who will come to help their children. There are no acts of violence in these communities. Wellington is in between Kissy and Calaba town. Wellington is located in the eastern part of Freetown .On the other side of Wellington is the sea and the island-like airport. The communities are set up on some of the most beautiful hills of Freetown; although its roads are rough to walk on. These communities has a population of about 7-8 thousand people. The people who live in these communities are made of all the tribes in Sierra Leone. They are very friendly and welcoming, although poverty is high. Electricity supply is not constant and water is fetched from wells during the dry season from November -June. The people in these communities speak Krio (pigeon English) and British English. | |
