Volunteer in Himalayas
We are a registered charity woking in the Himalayan region of Uttrakhand in northern India. We organize a teach English volunteering program with local schools to benefit the local children learn some English. We have been successfully running this program over 4 years now and made a great impact on the local community.

Who can volunteer

welcome any person, who is adaptable to new surroundings, open minded and respectful of local culture and customs. It is not mandatory for one to have any teaching certificate (for example TEFL), as we strongly believe that education is not confined and limited to books and curriculum. We have an age requirement of 18 years to visit and volunteer with us.

Volunteer job

We look forward to volunteers who can devote at least 4-5 hours each day working with us. Sunday’s are a day off. You would be required to:

Help in subjects such as English, Maths, Science and Computing, or any other academic or non-academic skills you may have.
Help with after school homework.
Help us with English speaking classes in the evening time.
Plan/teach new games.
Teach our kids some new sports, except of course cricket 
Teach music, arts and crafts, murals or any other co-curricular activity.
Share information and interesting facts about your country and culture.



What to expect

Small school building on rent accommodating 93 students, 7 classrooms and 9 staff members. Sometimes we arrange classrooms in the open ground also.
Poor students with improper dress sense but with lots of respect and love for you.
Staff members who are curious to talk with you in broken English.
A simple life led by mountain people, women carrying bunches of fodder, people in the farms, cows and buffalo in most of the households and many other native animals surrounding.
A basic shared accommodation along with vegetarian meals.
Being invited by our children for tea at their homes.
Invitation and visits to local fairs, festivals and weddings, if being held at the same time as your visit.
Lots of love and affection from our children, staff and local community.




Management

The principal for the school is Mr. Chauhan. He has over 15 years experience in teaching. To coordinate with volunteers, Naveen is our key person. He is well versed in English communication and is a graduate in English literature. He has vast experience in teaching and the organization of volunteering projects. The remainder of the school consists of 6 male teachers and 3 female teachers. All of the staff come from nearby villages.

Accommodation

The accommodation is provided at a location near the school, either at home stays or a community member owned guest house. Accommodation shall be on a sharing basis and a maximum of 2 volunteers will be adjusted in a room. Expect bucket showers with Indian squat toilets. The rooms are simple, yet neat and clean. In case you wish for a more comfortable stay with western toilets, we can help you arrange this at an additional cost.

Environment

The school is located in a small village named Kharadi, near the town of Barkot. Barkot is a bustling town in the Himalayas and is one of the major pilgrim stopovers to the Yamunotri Temple. Kharadi is a beautiful village en route to Yamunotri, one of the most famous centers of worship in India. Each year lots of people come to visit the temple. There are many other attractions nearby such as: Govind National Park, Saptaal Trek, Yamunotri Hot Springs, Dodital Lake and Lakhamandal - an important temple ruin preserved by Archeological Survey of India. There are also many other sights to see in the region. One can visit these places in their free time, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. Barkot is well connected by good network of roads. The nearest big cities are Rishikesh (a place world renowned for yoga) and Dehradun, the capital of our state Uttrakhand. The average time to travel to Barkot is 4-5 hours from Rishikesh or Dehradun.
