 IntroductionOur school motto is 'The child is precious' and we believe each and every child deserves the best start in life, with education forming a crucial part of this. The Cosmic Academy originally started as an early childhood development centre for children aged 2 to 5 years old. It has gradually extended to include primary and junior high school (JHS). It is located on a 4 acre plot of land in Amafro, a developing suburb of Accra, just near the main road leading to Cape Coast The centre currently has 130 children from the surrounding neighbourhoods and communities. Who can volunteer Volunteers of any age or gender who have a big heart, special patience for young children and the motivation to teach children 2-16 years are very welcome. No formal teaching qualifications are necessary, just lots of enthusiasm and patience! Volunteer job To assist the teachers in delivering lessons across a range of subjects. To play with the children during their recreational time. To accompany children on outings from time to time. If you have any particular areas of interest e.g. art, sport, music etc you can organise activities relating to these for the children to engage in. What to expect  To become fully immersed into Ghanaian life, to experience the culture and have opportunities to explore surrounding areas. We believe in treating all individuals with respect and do not have any religious preferences within the school. You can expect to leave with very fond memories of some really incredible children! Management This early childhood development centre was established by a career teacher, Jayaliila, who spent several years teaching in other schools before finally opening a school of her own called the Cosmic Academy. The volunteer coordinators who will communicate with you as you book and plan your journey are Jo and Zoe from the United Kingdom. Accommodation The Cosmic Academy is simple, quaint, and gives a taste of true Ghanaian livelihood. Volunteers and guests stay in a comfortable bedroom onsite at the academy. There is one bedroom which accommodates up to 4 volunteers. It has an adjoining bathroom with a shower and western style toilet. All meals and safe drinking water will be provided in the cost. Food is 100% vegetarian. Accommodation & Food cost We really appreciate your gift of time and try to keep costs as low as possible. Current prices are USD $450 for the first month and $100 for each additional month. For shorter durations prices are $250 for two weeks or $350 for three weeks. This is payable on arrival in US dollars. The price includes all meals and accommodation on site in a comfortable shared room (maximum of 4 volunteers). Environment The neighborhood is a mix between a rural and a developing community. It is quiet, but there is easy access to the hustle and bustle of Accra. Less than 30 minutes away is the economical beach resort Krokobite Beach. | |
